Organic-inorganic composite materials for environmental remediation

We have synthesized various functional nanomaterials for environmental and biological applications. In general our projects fit into the following interconnected lines.

1. Nano-adsorbents-immobilized polymeric membranes

The use of engineered membranes, which are able to support adsorbents stably, minimizes the aggregation/agglomeration of the adsorbent and also allows easy separation of solid waste materials. As membrane purification is suitable for continuous operation, adsorbent-embedded membranes can be developed as a flow-through unit for the repetitive treatment of water. We investigate functionalized organic-inorganic composites to remove hazardous substances such as radioisotopes, heavy metals, and organic dyes in water.

2. Bioremediation method using nanoadsorbents-embedded bacteria (in collaboration with Prof. Y. J. Choi in University of Seoul)

Bioremediation is regarded as a highly useful method for treatment of toxic pollutant and it have often applied as an alternative to the existing chemical remediation process. The microorganism employed in this method can access the contaminated area without excavation and this advantage also offers a cost-effective management of a polluted environment. Recently, we have reported engineered bacteria to remove radioactive iodine wastes in water.
